DFCSG News - Southport, 21st September 2024

Missed yesterday's game or just couldn't get hold of a programme? YOURCLUB Content brings you DFCSG's programme notes from the Southport game.

WELCOME FROM JON SADDINGTON

West Didsbury & Chorlton pushed us all the way, but we deservedly progressed to the Third Round Qualifying of the Emirates FA Cup. Dreams of an away trip to a Premier League giant remain alive and well.

Some might say that our margin of victory should have been greater against a team from Step 9m but any team would struggle with 6 or 7 first team players missing, so credit to the lads for digging deep. It was great to see the U23 lads given a chance with Will Maddison performing admirably throughout his 35-minute cameo.

Today we face Southport FC who have become regular opponents in the National League North. At the time of writing, the Sandgrounders occupy 14th place in league; two places and one point above the Quakers. Southport progressed through the FA Cup with a 2-1 home win against Hyde United, but their league form is somewhat indifferent and includes two 1-4 defeats against Hereford & Chorley.

Southport are steered by experienced manager Jim Bentley (formerly of Morecambe, Fylde & Rochdale) and have some decent players amongst their ranks including goalkeeper Chris Renshaw (former Curzon Ashton 'player of the season'), Danny Philliskirk (former Oldham, Blackpool & Fylde midfielder) and Marcus Carver (signed permanently from Scunthorpe after an initial loan spell). Keenan Quansah, brother of Liverpool & England defender Jarrell Quansah, should also feature in the matchday squad.

Our last game against Southport ended in a 2-0 home win for Darlo with goals coming from Cedric Main & Matty Cornish. I'm sure we'd all take the same result today.

Finally, I'd like to extend a warm welcome to the supporters, players, and officials of Southport. Enjoy the game!

MORE THAN HALF OF WOMEN HAVE EXPERIENCED SEXISM AT MATCHES

Earlier this month, 'Kick It Out' the charity dedicated to putting an end to all forms of discrimination within sport, launched a campaign to combat sexism and misogyny in football, with new research commissioned by the charity showing that 52% of women fans have experienced sexist behaviour or language on matchdays.

The campaign, supported by Sky Sports, Her Game Too and White Ribbon, aims to raise awareness of sexism and misogyny, challenge sexist behaviour, encourage women to report sexism and call on football to take reports more seriously.
